World Teachers' Day, 5 October
Over the past few years, global transformations, including the sanitary crisis, violent conflict, social inequalities, demographic change, the digital turn, and environmental degradation have caused the international community to reflect upon the future of education and the role it plays in addressing these societal concerns. The report of the International Commission on the Futures of Education, Reimagining our futures together: a new social contract for education (UNESCO, 2021) and the Transforming Education Summit (2022) have analyzed and documented these preoccupations and called for systemic change to address them, ensuring the right to education is preserved for all.

Norton High School participates in the UNESCO International Day of Education under the theme “Changing Course, Transforming Education”.

On 24 January 2022, we will be celebrating the fourth International Day of Education under the theme “Changing Course, Transforming Education”. As it was detailed in  UNESCO’s recent global Futures of Education report, transforming the future requires an urgent rebalancing or our relationships with each other, with nature as well as with technology that permeates our lives, bearing breakthrough opportunities while raising serious concerns for equity, inclusion and democratic participation.

This year’s International Day of Education will be a platform to showcase the most important transformations that have to be nurtured to realize everyone’s fundamental right to education and build a more sustainable, inclusive and peaceful futures. It will generate debate around how to strengthen education as a public endeavour and common good, how to steer the digital transformation, support teachers, safeguard the planet and unlock the potential in every person to contribute to collective well-being and our shared home.

Superintendent: Schools are Closed but Classes are In

A letter to the community from San Diego County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Gothold

Superintendent Dr. Paul Gothold

There are many questions circulating after remarks by Governor Gavin Newsom and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond about if and when California campuses will reopen this school year.

The San Diego County Office of Education continues to carefully monitor guidance from federal, state, and local public health and education agencies. All decisions about reopening will be made in conjunction with local public health officials. We continue to hold out hope that campuses will reopen later this spring, but are making plans to continue teaching and learning in earnest if that is not the case.

I want to be very clear that the 2019-20 school year is not over, it has just transitioned from classroom instruction into distance learning. As Superintendent Thurmond said today, “schools are closed but classes are in.”

San Diego County school districts, and our own school programs, are quickly transitioning into a new way of teaching and learning to meet the health and safety impacts of COVID-19.

We are also extremely concerned about the social and emotional well-being of all of our students, and are working on ways to stay connected even at a distance. We also know that many students (especially our seniors, who we know were looking forward to celebrating promotion and graduation ceremonies) are very concerned about missing out on end-of-year activities and celebrations. Please know that schools are planning how we might offer these experiences in different formats and/or at a later date.

In the coming days and weeks, schools will provide families with information regarding how grades, graduation, transcripts, scholarships, summer school, and continued distance learning instruction will be handled.

While we recognize this situation poses challenges and hardship to many families, the most effective way to slow and disrupt the transmission of this pandemic – and therefore get back to normal – is by continuing to implement social distancing practices. We are grateful to our community for everything you are doing during this unique and difficult time.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this unprecedented time. In the meantime, please trust that we are doing everything in our power to prioritize student safety, keep our community updated, and work toward the goal of getting our teachers and learners back together as soon as we can.

March 10, 2020
Dear School Leaders,
San Diego County public health officials announced last night that the county has its first presumptive positive case of COVID-19. At this time, the individual is quarantined at a local hospital and there is no active threat to the public. State officials also indicated yesterday that with 133 positive cases in the state, they have moved from a policy of containment to one of mitigation. U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams said in a recent interview that shifting to a mitigation phase means that communities will see more cases and need to start thinking about whether it makes sense to cancel large gatherings, close schools, and make it more feasible for employees to work from home.
I met yesterday with Governor Gavin Newsom, Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, county superintendents of schools, and top advisers from the state Department of Public Health and Office of Emergency Services. They were very clear that at this point, decisions around school closures will be made by school districts in conjunction with local public health.
Pandemic Response Threat Plan Template Now Available
As you know SDCOE has been developing a pandemic response threat plan template for schools that is customizable to help in preparing for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) should it spread in San Diego County.
Based on guidance from national, state, and local health agencies, and developed in consultation with public and school health officials, school safety experts, and administrators from public, private, and charter schools, the SDCOE Pandemic Threat: COVID-19 template
  • Defines roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders
  • Includes triggering criteria for actions to take before, while, and after COVID-19 cases are present
  • Lists goals, objectives, and action steps districts and schools should take in each scenario
Additional support resources will be posted online at www.sdcoe.net/coronavirus in the next several days to assist you in your planning.
We are hosting a workshop on the creation of school plans for COVID-19 using SDCOE’s Pandemic Threat template and toolkit on March 16 from 9 to 11 a.m. Due to space limitations, we can only accommodate one representative from each school in-person; participants may also attend online via ZOOM meeting. RVSP for the training here.
Guidance Updates
  • Guidelines for Schools: Criteria for staying home, or being sent home, from school or work continue to evolve based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and public health departments at the State and County. The guidelines are being updated daily to keep our student and staff populations safe and healthy. View the latest version here.
  • Guidance for Cleaning Schools: The SDCOE Risk Management team has curated guidance that can assist in determining which products are compliant with the Healthy Schools Act and may be used to clean in advance of a COVID-19 case in your schools.
  • Mass Gatherings: California Department of Public Health has issued new guidance on mass gatherings with recommendations for counties with and without evidence of community transmission.
This is a fluid situation that continues to evolve. We will share additional information as it becomes available. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need additional assistance in the meantime.
Sincerely,
Paul

GREAT HONOR AND AWARD FOR NORTON HIGH SCHOOL

information for parents

Although we are a 100% distance learning school, we would like to make the public aware of the official announcement of the County of San Diego regarding the Covid-19 crisis:

Dear School Leaders,

I want to make sure you are aware that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued new guidance for people who have traveled to countries with widespread, ongoing transmission of COVID-19.

At this time, people who have traveled to China, Iran, Italy, and South Korea (Level 3 Travel Health Notice countries) are asked to self-quarantine and practice social distancing for a period of 14 days from the time they left the area. We anticipate Japan (Level 2 Travel Health Notice) will be added to that list soon, so our materials reflect the same guidance.

Specifically, the CDC instructions for people who have traveled to these countries are:

·  Take your temperature with a thermometer two times a day and monitor for fever. Also   watch for cough or trouble breathing.

·  Stay home and avoid contact with others. Do not go to work or school for this 14-day period. Discuss your work situation with your employer before returning to work.

·   Do not take public transportation, taxis, or ride-shares during the time you are practicing social distancing.

·   Avoid crowded places (such as shopping centers and movie theaters) and limit your activities in public.

·  Keep your distance from others (about 6 feet or 2 meters).

With spring break approaching, you may want to share this information with parents and staff. This template letter, in English and Spanish, provides some language you can use to inform your community about the new guidance.

Your school should also consider how to address self-quarantine-related absences (whether for employees or for students). Yesterday the California Department of Education sent guidance to school districts and charter schools regarding independent study and distance learning options.

We have added the letter to our COVID-19 webpage, in addition to other resources for school leadership and school nurses.

We will share additional information as it becomes available. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need additional assistance in the meantime.

Sincerely,

Paul
